- The first step is to ensure that the vehicle is not moving.
- Put the vehicle in park and apply the emergency brake.
- Place a wheel chock or wooden block behind the vehicle’s tyres if it is on an incline. If the car is in a garage, keep the garage door open.

A wrench to loosen the cables, gloves, and petroleum jelly to spread on the terminal before installing the new battery are the only tools needed to change a car battery.

- First, use a wrench to disconnect the negative cable.
- Remove the positive cable.
- Lift the battery out using the strap, but be cautious of any leaks because battery acid is hazardous.

- Before using your new battery, check to see if it needs to be charged. When you buy most batteries, they are at least 75% charged.
- Replace the old battery with the new one.
- Attach the hold-down clamp
- Apply petroleum jelly to the battery terminals to slow corrosion.
- Connect the positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal.
